after being thrashed at the San Mames in the first leg, Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp by Athletic Bilbao, who won the Spanish Super Cup 5-1 on aggregate.
It means that fireworks are needed from Lionel Messi and he put his side 1-0 up on the stroke of half-time. But Gerard Pique was sent off shortly into the second period before Aritz Aduriz slotted in the goal that sealed glory for Bilbao.

That's all from me
Thanks for joining as Athletic Bilbao hold Barcelona to a 1-1 draw to lift the Spanish Super Cup. Goodnight!
22:58
Not a good start for Barcelona
Luis Enrique makes his players stay out on the pitch to show respect to Bilbao, who now have hold of the trophy.
Enrique and Barcelona will have a chance to put this right at the weekend. They face Bilbao back at the San Mames on Sunday in the opening weekend of La Liga fixtures.
22:53
FT Barcelona 1-1 Athletic Bilbao
Bilbao's players are dancing on the Nou Camp pitch. They followed up a stunning performance Friday at the San Mames by a disciplined display that nullified Barcelona's feared attack.
They beat Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate to win the Super Cup. Barcelona's players look shell-shocked.
22:48
Luis Enrique dejected
Losing with silverware in sight is not something Luis Enrique or Barcelona are used to but the manager has the look of a man who knows his fate now.
We are in the 90th minute at the Nou Camp and three minutes have been added on.
Aritz Aduriz celebrates scoring for Bilbao against Barcelona
22:44
Red card! Kike Sola!
High leg down the shin on Javier Mascherano and he is sent off about four minutes after coming on! It was untidy but not mailicious, however he cannot have any complaints.
Three minutes left plus added time.
22:40
Aduriz taken off by Bilbao
Aduriz comes off with 10 minutes left and Kike Sola replaces him. Aduriz is greeted gleefully by his team mates as he takes his seat on the Bilbao bench.
He has scored four times in two games against Barcelona and Bilbao have a Europa League qualifier on Thursday they will need him to prepare for.
22:34
Barcelona 1-1 Athletic Bilbao, 75 mins
De Marcos wins a header against Mathieu and the ball drops to the feet of Aduriz just outside the penalty area.
But nobody is anywhere near the forward, who has acres of space due to Pique's dismissal. Aduriz shoots low and Bravo, who has rushed out of his goal, parries the attempt back into his feet and he slots home.
That is surely that!
22:32
Goal! Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Barcelona
Aduriz kills the tie!
22:31
Suarez so close!
The Messi-Suarez combination is a dangerous one and the Argentina forward feeds the former Liverpool man this time.
Suarez then surges forward and shoots from the edge of the area with his left foot but the attempt is wide.
22:27
70 mins, Barcelona 1-0 Athletic Bilbao
Barca seem set to win the battle but lose the war. They lead Bilbao 1-0, need three more to avoid defeat.
22:26
Subs for Bilbao and Barcelona
Elustondo replaces Etxeita for Bilbao. Rakitic and Pedro off for Munir and Sandro for Barcelona.
22:21
Snapshot from Suarez
But the forward drills a low shot straight at Iraizoz from 25 yards.
22:19
62 mins, Barcelona 1-0 Athletic Bilbao
But Barcelona are down to 10 men as Gerard Pique has been sent off. 30 minutes left, three goals needed at the Nou Camp.
22:18
Rakitic misses a sitter!
Barca get forward down the left from the corner and Mathieu sends the ball across the six yard area where Rakitic is there to meet it but the playmaker sends it the wrong side of the post! Ugly miss.
22:16
Red card Pique!
The defender has been given his marching orders! He was incensed that Aduriz was not flagged offside and kept on remonstrating with officials furiously... and the referee has sent him off!
22:14
Aduirz close
The Bilbao striker works a yard of space between Pique and Mathieu and gets a shot away which Bravo turns behind the post.
22:11
Tepid start from Barcelona
Barca looked rattled, Bilbao look comfortable. They are putting their foot on the ball and passing it round in Barcelona's half.
Suarez stabs the ball into the path of Pedro as Barca try to spring a counter attack but once again, a Barcelona forward is flagged offside.
22:05
Pictures of the goalmouth scramble
Iraizoz refused to let go of the ball when Messi scored just before half-time. Bilbao will need more of that stubbornness in this half.
22:03
Players back out on the pitch
Barcelona begin the hunt for three more goals to avoid defeat in Super Cup final. The second half has just started.
21:48
Barcelona 1-0 Athletic Bilbao HT
It was one of the final incidents of the half. Barcelona's first shot on target is rewarded with a goal and it gives them hope. They need three more.
21:46
Barcelona 1-0 Athletic Bilbao
Hope springs eternal at the Nou Camp and it is that man Lionel Messi once again.
Rakitic flicks the ball high across the penalty area and Suarez leaps high to chest the ball down and Messi, on the run, cushions it with one touch and lashes it home with the next.
As the Barca fans roar into life, the Barca squad desperately try and grab the ball out of the grasp of Bilbao goalkeeper Iraizoz. He is not letting go, despite about five players trying to get it off him and the referee has to break it up before it turns into something nasty. Pedro gets booked.
21:43
GOAL! 1-0 Barcelona, Messi
21:40
Glorious chance... for Bilbao!
Eraso pounces on a poor pass from Mathieu and he bursts into the Barca penalty area. He has two options and enough time to acknowledge both: shoot, or pass to Aduriz who is alone in the centre and would have the simplest of finishes to apply to kill the encounter.
But Eraso shoots high into the side netting and Barcelona breathe a sigh of relief. How costly could that miss be? It was the best chance of the game.
21:35
Iniesta way over
This is getting to look very poor for Barcelona now.
Ivan Rakitic works an opening down the right and cuts it back to Andres Iniesta on the edge of the area.
Sadly for Luis Enrique, Iniesta's shot would have been at home in the Rugby World Cup rather than the Nou Camp.
Poor finishing is costing Barcelona.
21:31
Boveda booked, free-kick in Messi range
Boveda has spent two years on loan at Eibar. This is his first start for Bilbao since 2009. And he has been booked for bringing down Iniesta about 25 yards out.
Messi, who else, stands over the ball but curls it on to the roof of the net.
21:28
Pedro lets fly
This could possible be Pedro's last Barcelona appearance but he was unable to hit the back of the net with a chance at the start of the game at the Nou Camp.
21:24
Bilbao with a corner
But it is light relief for the visitors as Pique gets it away with a trademark towering header.
Barca are still looking to break the offside trap with a through ball. Maybe time to start some that one-touch passing they are famed for.
21:20
Bilbao stubborn, 0-0 after 20 minutes
20 minutes gone at the Nou Camp and while it is Barcelona who have the upper hand in terms of proceedings on the night, it is Bilbao whose four-goal advantage is preserved.

21:14
Suarez offside again
Low ball forward from Iniesta sees Suarez hit the burners but the linesman's flag is up, much to the striker's disdain but it is a correct decision.
That's the second time this Bilbao defence, which is under pressure but looks organised, has executed the offside trap to perfection against Suarez.
21:10
Pique staying forward
Andres Iniesta tried to thread in Gerard Pique, yes Gerard Pique, but the defender who is again positioned as a centre-forward cannot find his stride to reach the ball.
21:08
Pique hits the bar!
He's got to score! Play is scrambled down the left but a low cross eventually comes in at the feet of Gerard Pique, who turns the ball against crossbar from about eight yards on the half volley. He's usually so composed in the other box, especially for a defender!
Moments earlier, Pedro turned a half-chance over the bar form the edge of the area.
Electrifying start from Barcelona!
21:06
Messi sent sprawling
An incisive pass between the centre-back and left-back by Dani Alves instantly unhinges the Bilbao defence and gives Messi a glimpse of an opening into the penalty area.
But the Argentina international runs out of pitch to keep the ball in, and his momentum takes him into the cameramen behind the byline.
21:01
We're underway
No side has never come from four down and won the Spanish Super Cup. Can Barcelona be the first?
We're underway and there is a ferocious atmosphere at the Nou Camp. Suarez already narrowly caught offside inside 30 seconds.
20:58
Players in the tunnel
Both sets of players are walking on to the pitch. Gerard Pique shoots a glare at the Super Cup while Bilbao's players wave at their fans way up in the gods at the Nou Camp. Kick-off imminent.
20:54
This is what they are playing for
20:45
Barcelona warming up
20:41
Two to watch for Bilbao
And they are the two scorers from Friday's game.
Mikel San Jose used to be on the books at Liverpool when Rafa Benitez was manager. He is comfortable either as a central defender or defensive midfielder and is a valuable cog in this Bilbao side.
Further up the pitch, Aritz Aduriz might be 34 but he last week's hat-trick saw some of the most clinical finishing of his life against Barcelona. His confidence will be oozing tonight and Barca cannot afford for him to even get a sniff if they are to life the cup tonight.

Man City thrash Chelsea 3-0 to go top of EPL

Man City thrash Chelsea 3-0 to go top of EPL  print

Manchester City Chelsea
Manchester City went top of the Premier League table with a dominant victory over reigning champions Chelsea.
Sergio Aguero was denied three times by Chelsea keeper Asmir Begovic before he marked his first game of the season with a goal after Yaya Toure’s pass.
City were dominant, Eden Hazard forcing Joe Hart into his only serious save.
Vincent Kompany made it 2-0 with a header from David Silva’s corner before Fernandinho fired home from 18 yards.
Here is what Mourinho said on Sky Sports that set twitter agog: “The best team in the first half won the game. The best team in the second half was Chelsea for sure. We had a difficult first half, we didn’t create a lot and our goalkeeper made a few important saves.
“Second half everything was different. If the 1-0 was a doubtful result at minute 70, 3-0 is completely fake. At 1-0 Chelsea were the best team for the whole second half.
“They make a change because they feel 1-0 is in danger and we concede a second goal. If 1-1 a different story, their team is in trouble.”

Chevron retiree set to divorce wife over adultery, financial recklessness

Chevron retiree set to divorce wife over adultery, financial recklessness  print

court
Esther Ajagbe
Joseph Ogbigo, 55, a retiree of Chevron Nigeria Limited, is set to divorce his wife, Rita Ogbigo, over alleged adultery and financial recklessness.
He dragged her before an Igando Customary Court, in Lagos, western Nigeria, on a five-count charge of lack of care for him and the children, lack of respect for him and his family, willingly abandoning her matrimonial home for days, financial mismanagement of business and lack of love.
Ogbigo told the court that his wife never cared for him or the children.
He said on 18 March, 2015 she left the house for 10 days and took his car to Dele Ara Street in Ikotun (a church environment).
He said two days before she brought back the car, she lost her aunt and he gave her N22,000 for the burial.
Since then he said he did not see her until 15 May, 2015, after she had crashed his Highlander SUV which made her abandon the car.
Ogbigo said his wife prefers the car to the marriage. He claimed he opened a Coca-Cola depot worth N3.5 million and a rice depot worth N1.3 million for her.
He also told the court that Rita owed Coca-Cola N500,000 which made him seize the shop and sell the empty crates of bottles in order to pay the debt.
He also alleged that Rita owed a Pepsi dealer N270,000 which also prompted him to clear out the empty crates of bottles.
The retiree further accused his wife of adultery, saying she has a boyfriend who sent her a romantic message seven years ago and when she denied, he had to ensure she proved her innocence by sending her to the village to perform the traditional rites of killing a goat.
When Rita was called to the dock, she testified that her husband opened the depot for her, but did not spend the amount of money he claimed.
She said the Coca-Cola depot he opened for her was worth N1.5 million, and not N3.5 million and that the rice depot was worth N200,000, and not N1.3 million, and Pepsi N500,000.
She also accused her husband of freely giving out bags of rice from the rice depot to close associates and to a political party.
Rita claimed that she still loved her husband because he is the father of her children.
However, Mr. David Abraham (uncle to the complaint) said that the family members had already decided that the marriage be dissolved.
The case was adjourned till 2 September, 2015 by the president of the court, Mr. Oyekan.

APC hails rejuvenated Nigerian military under Buhari

APC hails rejuvenated Nigerian military under Buhari  print

Lai Mohammed, National Publicity Secretary, APC
Lai Mohammed, National Publicity Secretary, APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday said that the rejuvenated Nigerian military had the capability to defeat insurgency in the country.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, National Publicity Secretary of APC, in a statement issued in Lagos, said that the visible paradigm shift in the military’s approach to the battle against the insurgents was yielding positive results.
The statement said that the rejuvenated military was now taking the battle straight to the insurgents, instead of waiting for them to attack.
It described as reassuring the fact that Service Chiefs had been visiting the theatre of the battle in the Northeast, not only to pep up the fighting men and women, but also to meet with political and community leaders in the area.
“The stepped-up fight against Boko Haram has convinced Nigerians that, indeed, their military is getting its groove back, and can beat the three-month deadline set by President Muhammadu Buhari for Boko Haram to be defeated.
“The renewed battle has also shown that President Buhari was right in directing the relocation of the military’s command and control centre from Abuja to Maiduguri.
“Watching the video clip of Nigerian Air Force jets pounding targets in Sambisa Forest, which is the fortress of the insurgents, over the weekend arouses great pride in the military,” it said.
The statement commended the purposeful leadership and political will provided by President Buhari.
“The Nigerian neighbours are now ready to contribute their full quota to the battle, with the latest news indicating that Cameroon has decided to triple its initial troops contribution to the Multi-National Joint Task Force to reach 2,400 troops.
“Also, contrary to the lies being propagated by the naysayers, President Buhari’s visit to the US has reset Nigeria’s relations with that country to the level where much needed military hardware are now being sent to Nigeria to increase the country’s military firepower,” it said.
The statement urged the military to sustain its ongoing efforts to further degrade the fighting ability of the insurgents.
It also urged Nigerians to continue to support the troops in every way, to defeat insurgents once and for all.
The APC, in the statement, said it had always believed that the Nigerian military had what it takes to protect and defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and also to win an asymmetrical warfare like the one against Boko Haram – under the right circumstances.
“We are glad that the military is now proving us right,” it said.

Lagos APC asks Shelle to resign for deceiving PDP and Lagosians

Lagos APC asks Shelle to resign for deceiving PDP and Lagosians  print

Chief Tunji Shelle
Chief Tunji Shelle

The All Progressives Congress Lagos state Chapter has asked the chairman of Lagos PDP Mr. Tunji Shelle to resign for deceiving his party and Lagosians which led to their crushing and debilitating defeat in the last general elections. In a release signed by APC State Publicity Secretary, Mr Joe Igbokwe, the party says Shelle should have resigned honourably and given way to a more competent person having lost the governorship elections in 2011 and 2015 in Lagos State.
“All over the world when a chairman of a party becomes a serial loser he does not need anybody to counsel him to leave the stage for fresh hands but not Shelle of Lagos PDP. If he is not blaming party leaders, he turns his miserable searchlight to the opposition and now he is blaming the former president Jonathan.
“The totally devastated Shelle who has been suffering votes of no confidence since the last elections told his party members in Amuwo Odofin Lagos that former president Jonathan allowed APC to get away with a lot of illegalities during the last elections which led to his own defeat. According to Shelle if Jonathan had won the presidential elections, PDP would have used Soldiers, Police, DSS, SSS, Civil Defence etc. to steal Lagos.
“Now, Tunji Shelle must be told that the day Jonathan picked the PDP ticket for the presidential elections was the day he lost the election. Jonathan should not have contested in 2011 given the political arrangement put in place after the June 12, 1993 election crisis to rotate power between the North and the South every eight years,” said Igbokwe.
According to the APC scribe, “there was no way Jonathan would have won with eleven states in SS and SE against 25 states in the SW, NE, NW and NC. Two small zones in the SE and SS would not have defeated the four big zones of SW, NC, NE and NW. Even if SS and SE voted 150% beyond Mathematics, Jonathan would not have won that election. In fact, the millions of votes Jonathan got was padded. That was the permutations, calculations and analysis empty heads and peevish school boys in PDP failed to take into consideration.
“In Lagos, Shelle was a living witness to many illegalities PDP and the law enforcement agencies unleashed on Lagosians. PDP illegally set up SURE-P Recruitment Centre at old Toll Gate in Lagos and used it to fleece unsuspecting Lagosians of their hard earned money in the name of providing jobs for them. Shelle waited until PDP lost Lagos for him to tell the world that one man who had dubious courage defrauded Lagosians.
“Where was Shelle when PDP unleashed OPC illegally on Lagosians one Monday morning from the old toll gate to the National Stadium, grounding Lagos, bearing guns, machetes, destroying all APC Campaign materials with the help of the police along that corridor, shouting that Jega must go and that PVC and Card Readers should not be used? Where was Shelle when Jonathan brought millions of dollars and pound sterling to throw around in Lagos and consequently divided Lagos along ethnic lines, which nearly caused xenophobic attacks in the metropolis?
“Where was Shelle when one Segun Adewale (Aeroland) and one Raheem were brandishing guns and shooting people in Alimosho, Lagos while APC was busy campaigning? Where was Shelle when PDP imposed Jim Agbaje on the party at Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos which led to massive shootings and stampede? Where was Shelle when his PDP left the campaigns to win elections and resorted to shooting APC members in Lagos Island? The truth is that Lagos PDP introduced dangerous ethnic politics in Lagos which was not enough to make Jimi Agbaje the governor.”
Igbokwe further queried: “Did Shelle see all the hate campaign PDP and its agents dished out in the bid to tear president Buhari down and yet the man ran away with victory? Shelle may not know this, most of the campaign advertorials PDP pushed out to sell Jonathan ended up being used to sell candidate Buhari. The Campaign worked heavily for PMB instead of Jonathan.
“Lagos APC insists that Shelle should stop crying over spilled milk and face realities. Old ways will never open new doors. PDP has played their last card in Nigeria and Lagos and it will take years for this party to rise again in this country”
“Excuses and more excuses can never help Shelle and PDP. Governor Ambode defeated Jimi Agbaje with more than 150,000 votes even with their illegalities, money politics and ethnic politics. This is a lesson. Let Shelle resign and give way for a fresh hand to help the party. This is the path of honour.”

2 die, one injured in Lagos train accident

2 die, one injured in Lagos train accident  print

Two passengers reportedly died while one sustained severe injuries when two trains collided on Sunday in the Agege Area of Lagos State, western Nigeria.Mr Akin Osinowo, Lagos Railway District Manager (RDM), confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Lagos on Monday.
Osinowo called on the families of the deceased to come and collect the corpses at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Meta, with relevant information.
Osinowo said that the two casualties were passengers who illegally hanged on the rooftop of the moving train.
He added that the injured passenger was currently receiving treatment at an hospital.
The district manager said that the Managing Director of the NRC, Mr Adeseyi Sijuwade, has instituted a panel of inquiry to find out the immediate and remote causes of the incident.
According to him, members of the panel are the Directors of Operations, Electrical, Mechanical, Signal and Intelligence Unit.
“The Managing Director directed the head of various departments to visit the site and interview eye-witnesses, visit the police station and make inquiry.
“And also to find out the main causes of the accident and determine the details and number of casualties.
“The families of the deceased should bring a documentary evidence to support their claim, evidence of identity of the corpses, evidence of their relationship with the dead and a Sworn Affidavit.
“After being certified, they will be referred to the police authority where we will ensure that the bodies are released to them,’’ Osinowo said.
The RDM appealed to commuters and the train users to value their lives and stop hanging on moving trains.
